Photometric Stereo Line Light

Photometric Stereo Line Light (MST-PSL) is a built-in high power line illumination unit with integrated LED-driver and four illumination channels specifically designed for the use of the photometric stereo multichannel technology of MSTVision.

In combination with one or more line scan cameras, the high irradiance and fast switching cycles enable seamless inspection of challenging surfaces, even at high speeds.

Technical concept

The Photometric Stereo Line Light consists of four channels in an “oblique beam” arrangement, in which the light emerges from the front surface at an angle. Unlike other systems, the individual LEDs are aligned directly, which offers significant advantages in terms of irradiance and angular accuracy.

The typical configuration has a center tilt angle of 35° with an opening angle of the individual LEDs of 35° ± 8°.  The LEDs are focused in the direction of the line scan camera so that, in pulsed mode, an irradiance of up to 6 kW/m² can be achieved with a depth measurement range of 40 mm – 60 mm below the system.

The fixed, double-sided lighting concept simplifies mechanical integration at a fixed working distance and saves space, allowing the system to be accommodated in an installation area of less than 300 mm in forward direction. Variable system lengths of up to 1710 mm in the scan direction are possible, resulting in inspection widths of up to 1400 mm.

Technical specifications

The developed internal LED driver theoretically supports power peaks of well over 0.5 kW per running metre per lighting direction and frequencies of over 50 kHz, which enables line frequencies of over 200 kHz. The MST-PSL does not require an external controller and only needs one signal and one supply line. The only requirement is a standard frame grabber from Basler, whose range of functions has been extended by MSTVision. It takes over the synchronised control of camera and lighting as well as the calculation of photometric stereo images without burdening the CPU.
As both parameterisation and image acquisition are carried out via the same standard interface (GenTL) of the frame grabber, software integration is extremely simple.
If required, additional illumination configurations such as transmitted light or special wavelengths can be added using standard components. The maximum data rate for image acquisition is determined exclusively by the CoaXPress interface and the line scan camera used. The Photometric Stereo Linescan Solution enables the processing of up to 3.6 GB/s.
